All Stars Teen Mentoring Art Exhibition

We held our first Art Exhibition at Joondalup Resort on Thursday 23 September. On display, was a collaborative dot painting of the Rainbow Serpent, which the children created with Helen Latham, a local indigenous Artist.

The Art Exhibition is part of a new program supported by Telethon, called the Telethon Teen Mentoring program, which connects autistic year six students with High School autistic Mentors.

Art Therapist, Larah Cornthwaite, has been guiding the children in the weeks leading up to the event and said “I am so proud of the body of work these children have produced. Throughout this creative journey, they have connected with their inner strength, confidence and own creative self-expression.”

Cara Fisher and Jo McMillan, our Co-Founders were thrilled to give their autistic participants an opportunity to showcase their skills and talents to their family and friends, and other members of the community.

“When given the right support and belief in their abilities, autistic children are capable of anything. More than that, many of our participants are skilled artists in their own right, and it’s a privilege to help them share their gifts in such a celebratory manner.” Jo McMillan said.

“Our Autistic Mentors and Mentees are terrific,” said Cara Fisher. “This is our Mentors’ first paid job, and they have stepped up to the challenge with enthusiasm and ease. They love taking on a leadership role and their Mentees adore them.”

The Art Exhibition was attended by established autistic Artist, Jane Ibbitson, as well as Mayor Hon. Albert Jacob and his family. The Mentors and Mentees hung their own work, gave speeches and enjoyed the evening with their families. It was a highlight of the term and a glowing example of their capabilities, made possible through the Telethon supported program.
